If you're not familiar with what CBT is, its a particular type of therapy which is focused on practical strategies with an aim to lead to measurable outcomes in everyday functions. This is how it works. You start therapy. You are told you think negative thoughts which turn out as self fulfilling prophesies so you need to stop your negative thoughts. This is followed by strategies on how to stop the negative thoughts. Regardless of the strategy, the point is to get yourself to realize you are having negative thoughts and you need to refute them and voila! you are cured.
There are tons of studies out there about the "efficacy" of CBT for social anxiety. There are a lot of comments on some websites out there where CBT totally helped get over social anxiety. I've messaged a lot of these people. I've heard back from less then 5% who experienced any noticeable changes in their social anxiety. For most people CBT just ended up making them feel even more negative because they were trained to always focus on and identify their negative thoughts.
There have also been many studies that have proved CBT does not cause any long term changes in brain chemistry. Its odd that these studies never get reported in the media!
Unfortunately CBT did nothing for me. That being said others may have a different opinion and want to try CBT and may experience positive outcomes.
There has been some recent research from Stanford University that has led to an online CBT model: JOYABLE They offer a coach-supported program which uses CBT strategies to help clients overcome social anxiety. This would be convenient for people who cant afford long term one on one therapy. They also offer a money back guarantee if clients don't experience any success.
