Research shows physical differences in brains of individuals with social anxiety disorder 1
This is an exciting development. I expect this will lead to additional focus on the causes of SAD and also attract additional research funding.
Recently an increasing number of neuroimaging researches have focused on characterizing brain circuits of SAD, allowing a comprehensive understanding of its anatomical and functional substrate. Specifically, findings from functional neuroimaging studies indicated abnormalities in the neural circuitry including the amygdala, hippocampal and parahippocampal gyri, posterior insula, dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), ventrolateral prefrontal cortex (VLPFC) and temporal gyrus. The most consistent finding in SAD studies through different experimental designs is the amygdala hyperactivity. Furthermore, the amygdala hyperactivity in SAD might represent the functional correlation of emotional disregulation and sustain threat-related processing bias.
Khloe Kardashian Says Brother Rob Suffers from 'Social Anxiety' 2
The only reason I looked at was because any time a celebrity announces they have some sort of mental health issue, the media goes in a frenzy and publishes tons of reports about the issue. This is great for social anxiety. More public exposure generally leads to pharma companies paying more attention to the condition resulting in additional research and development funding. All good things.
Before he posted a disturbing Gone Girl image aimed at his sister Kim Kardashian on Sunday, Rob Kardashian's other sibling Khloe was speaking up in defense of her brother. "I just feel, especially over the last year, Rob has become very introverted and has a kind of social anxiety," she told Wonderwall while hosting a party at Las Vegas' 1 OAK. "He's definitely not at his happiest place that he once was, and I know he can get to that happy place and he will."
Technological Therapy Shows Promise 3
Cognitive behavior modification (CBM), which uses computer software to help divert patients' attention from anxiety and interpret situations more calmly, is showing promise in the treatment of social anxiety disorder, suggests new research.
