Its not going to be easy.
Doctors are not comfortable prescribing this drug. I remember going to a clinic when I had some unrelated issue and as is almost a habit now I told him I am on Nardil which is an MAOI and it has drug interactions etc, he gave me a look like I was pulling his leg and started laughing. I told him I wasn't kidding. He was actualy shocked and wanted to know which doc had prescribed Nardil and how long I'd been taking it. That just goes to show you Nardil is hardly a popular drug in the medical community. I have read they dont even talk about MAOI class drugs in med school any more!
This means getting a Nardil prescription is not easy.
Its not impossible either. My advice?
- Older psychiatrists are more likely to prescribe Nardil. Newer med school grads are too terrified of liability issues
- Having a history with your doc is helpful. If you have tried some SSRIs and they didnt work, your doc will be more open to the possibility of trying other options, including Nardil. most docs will not come up with the option themselves though so you will have to make the initial suggestion
- Get to know Nardil. Check out some peer reviewed studies. You can find some good ones on the DOES IT REALLY WORK page on this website. You can then have a productive conversation with your doctor. Doctors will be more willing to write a Nardil prescription if they think the patient understands the drugs, any associated risks, side effect profile and issues with food and drug interactions.
- Print out a list of the Nardil food interactions and show it to your doc. They'll feel better knowing you are aware of the precautions that Nardil users have to take. You can find the list of the Nardil Food restrictions page on this website.
- Don't bother trying to get a Nardil prescription from a GP. They wont write it. You'll need to see psychiatrist.
- In some jurisdictions you can order Nardil online which is super convenient. Send me a private message if you want details around how this works.
